Where Does Extravagance Begin?

I often check eBay for bicycles that I would love to own but aren’t likely to ever will. This past week I came across this beauty:

Serotta is one of the best known and believed to be among the best bicycle builders in the world. The original price of this bicycle is $9199.99, so the minimum starting bid of $5,899.99 might seem like a bargain!

Might.

Yes, I would love to have a bike like this; my feeling is that my Cannondales and Bianchis wouldn’t compare on the road, but I could also buy dozens of those versus one Serotta.

Is there a point where buying something like this would not be extravagance? I think that if your income is very large and your debt is minimal or non-existant, it would still be an extravagance to buy a bike like this as opposed to something off the shelf. But at the same time, if you were a world class cyclist or had need of a special fit to avoid injury, it might be worthwhile.

But that’s a might.

By comparison, this Serotta seems to be a bargain. Still out of my price range, but I can indeed dream.
