Is Mindshare Worth More Than Marketshare?
Today, no. But it might tomorrow.
Mindshare is what those on the cutting edge of technology have. For instance, even though it’s a remote second to Microsoft’ Windows dominance in operating systems, many in the mainstream and tech media think more highly of Apple’s OS X. Blackberry is out in front in smartphones yet Apple’s iPhone is considered at the technological edge with Google’s Android and Palm’s WebOS trailing.
While mindshare certainly makes technology into the darlings of many, it doesn’t seem to make it number one in marketshare.
That said, I’m still more likely to invest in a company with mindshare than marketshare. Perhaps it’s like cheering for the underdog–I’m not sure it’s wiser, but it is what I do, and in the case of Apple (AAPL), it’s paid off well.
Let’s keep the two separate in our thoughts when considering what to invest in.
