A relatively recent newcomer to my portfolio (I’ve only owned this stock about a year and a half) is RPM International Inc. Not many people recognize that name off the top of their heads, but if you think Rust-Oleum–the spray paint that stops rust–you’re thinking RPM.

RPM is not as large as many of the companies in which I own stock. It’s not a Dow component. It’s also not a tech juggernaut like Google or Apple or even Netflix. However, this multinational company specializing in coatings, sealants, and other chemicals is more than sixty years old, pays a dividend yielding 5.30%, and has performance that is somewhat like–and occasionally better than–the S&P 500.

RPM makes up far less than one percent of my portfolio and it’s held in my Roth IRA. So far, it’s looking like a long term holding, although I haven’t made up my mind on that. In any case, quality companies that pay nice dividends with performance like the S&P 500 are more than welcome in my portfolio, so I may be holding onto RPM International for quite some time.
