Is Second Hand Becoming Sexy?

It seems that by and large as more and more face economic difficulties, they’ve decided to–quite appropriately–spend less. Interestingly, a certain type of business has been busier (at least locally) during the downturn.

Thrift stores, like Savers, Goodwill, Salvation Army, and many others are experiencing an increase in business whereas traditional retailers–sellers of “new” products–are having difficulty. It appears that as dollars get tighter, more people are willing to go hunting for used items.

As for myself, I’ve been going to Savers for years and years, and lots of computer equipment I pick up is from there. In fact, my two most recent finds are a couple of those Linksys WRT54G series routers that are doing all kinds of neat things with dd-wrt installed. I believe this is another sign that as people face economic difficulties they are more and more willing to change their free spending ways and become thrifty.
