What’s in My Portfolio: Toyota

This is yet another in a series of looks at the stocks and mutual funds in my portfolio. This time we’ll look at one of (if not the) largest automobile manufacturers in the world, Toyota.

Like the rest of the automobile industry, Toyota is having difficulty. However, Toyota has had a long track record of success and has grown from a small company into one of the two largest auto manufacturers in existence. Their quality is well known and aside from recently, they have been very profitable.

Toyota pays a small dividend, but it’s a foreign dividend, so it’s treated a little differently than typical dividends in terms of taxes. Toyota is a stock that I own in a taxable account, but aside from dividends, I’ve never had to report anything since I’ve not sold. It’s not done all that well for me, but I’ll hold onto it for quite some time, because it fits my magical criteria of being a profitable company (with the exception of the current downturn) that is the best at what they do. I think Toyota will be a stock that pays off in the long run, even if it hasn’t done all that well for me yet.
