Thinking About the Economics of Pot Lucks
I don’t know how it is where you live, but I know here that there’s no worse faux pas than to run out of food at a party, and people just love food. At my office, pot lucks are a monthly if not sometimes weekly occurrence. People seem to think that if you go to a potluck for 10 people, you bring enough food for 10 people.
The problem with this kind of thinking is that if everyone does it, you end up with enough food for 100 people!
This past weekend I was at the Hawai’i Geek Meet, a now annual picnic for the Geeks on island. Just like last year there was way too much food, exactly because people would bring enough to feed an army instead of for just a bit more than one person.
If you’re going to a pot luck, just bring enough for one and maybe a little more. That’s the actual amount you’re supposed to bring!
