The Seductive Power of Discounts
Black Friday–I’m sure you’re tired of reading about it by now–has come and gone, and a couple of discounts in the way of online coupon came into my electronic mailbox–and expired without use, as tempting as they might be.
The two I’m thinking of in particular are from my favorite bicycle mail order houses, Nashbar and Performance Bike. Discounts like this–20% off for one day only–are certainly tempting, especially considering I often combine them with closeouts or returned merchandise to get products at a fraction of the prices I could get them here.
Unfortunately, given the current crunch I’m in, even though there are some bicycle parts I would like to get (and maybe some clothes and a new headlight), I’m having to pass on these coupons. I was seriously tempted, of course, but all I had to do was look at what I spent on my deductible as well as my holiday gift list in order to see that I had to let these go.
I also constantly remind myself that prices on these types of things will come down again. I’d love to be able to use some of this stuff sooner, but I can also tell you that until I get in better financial shape, I’ll have to wait. Yes, discounts are seductive, but will power can win out if you’re persistent, logical, and disciplined.
